Chinese National Mourning – Competitions rescheduled

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Beijing, CHN

Sport events cancelled all around China. The People’s Republic stopped today to mourn the victims of the Qinghai Province’s earthquake. The decision to cancel competitions at the 2010 ISSF World Cup in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events was communicated to the ISSF by local authorities late last night.

Today’s competitions were cancelled at the ISSF World Cup in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events in Beijing. The decision was taken by Chinese authorities, in the day of the National Mourning for the victims of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit the Qinghai Province, in northwest China, leaving more than 2000 dead and more than 12000 injured.

Chinese President Hu Jintao paid a silent tribute here in Beijing, and the all country stopped for several minutes. At Tian'anmen Square in downtown Beijing, thousands of people watched the national flag hoisted to full height and then lowered to half-mast.

The members of the Chinese Shooting Team, and the personnel of the Chinese Shooting Association, mourned the earthquake victims during a ceremony held at the shooting range, this morning. The shooters donated to support the victims and their families, and pleaded China’s sport fans to follow their example on CCTV.

National flags flew at half-mast at government agencies in the Chinese capital and all public entertainment was suspended, including the ISSF World Cup in Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events, taking place in these days at the 2008 Olympic venue of the Chinese capital.

The ISSF express its condolence in this painful circumstance.
