2013 ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Fort Benning: recap after five events

When the competition is half-way-through, and five out of ten events have been conducted, China leads the pack with a total of five medals. Two finals to be conducted today.

The second 2013 ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Stage is held in Fort Benning, GA, USA, from the 5th through the 13th of May. More than 290 athletes coming from 40 countries, for a total of 520 starts, registered to participate in the event.

 

When five out of ten event have been conducted, People’s Republic of China leads the provisory medal standings of the event with two Gold and three Silver medals.

 

The host of the competition, Team USA, ranks in second place with one Gold and Silver medal, while Germany places in third with one Gold, tied to Korea.

 

And it was a young Korean athlete, Kim Jangmi, who won the 10m Air Pistol Women event, the opening match of this ISSF World Cup Stage, on the 6th of May. Kim, a 2010 Youth Olympic Games Champion in this event, and a 2012 Olympic Champion in the 25m Pistol Women event, scored 199.6 points, beating China’s 26-year old Sun Qi by 9.6 to 9.1 points in a shoot-off for Gold. The Bronze medal went to the 2010 World Champ Zorana Arunovic, 26, from Serbia, who marked a final score of 178.2 points.

 

During the same competition day, the 10m Air Rifle Men event saw the success of a young trio. China’s 17-year old Yang Haoran won the event with 208.7 points, securing his first ISSF World Cup Gold ever. Following him, the Silver medal went to the home shooter, Dempster Christenson, 22, from USA, who shot 206.4 points in the final, while it was the reigning European Champion, 24-year old Sergey Richter of Israel, who won Bronze with 184.5 points.

 

On the 7th of May, the second competition day, it was the home hero Will Brown who won the 10m Air Pistol Men final, defeating skilled Olympians in spite of being a first-time finalist. The 21-year old Idaho shooter, who’s now part of the US Olympic team and trains in Colorado Spring, had indeed never participated in an ISSF final round, before. He pocketed Fort Benning’s Gold medal with 202.1 points, beating 29-year old two-time Olympian Oleh Omelchuk of Ukraine (second with 199.5 points), while the Bronze medal went to Russia’s Denis Koulakov, 30, with 180.6 points.

 

On the third competition day, the 8th of May, the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Fort Benning continued today with the 10m Air Rifle Women event, which saw the success of two Chinese teammates, Wu Liuxi and Chang Jing, first and second with 210.0 and 207.7 points, respectively. At the same time, with 185.6 points, the Air Rifle Bronze went to Petra Zublasing, an Italian shooter who feels at home in USA. The 23-year old Olympian studies at the West Virginia University, and has been living in the US for almost one year now.

 

Germany’s 25-year old Daniel Brodmeier won the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men event, yesterday, during the fourth competition day of this World Cup Stage. The German shooter moved in the lead on the very last standing competition shot, winning the Gold with a final score of 457.2 points, winning a neck and neck fight against China’s Kang Hongwei and Russia’s Fedor Vlaslov, second and third with 455.7 and 447.0 points respectively.

 

The ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Fort Benning, continues today with two more medal matches: the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Women final (scheduled at 12 AM local time) and the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men final (schedules at 4.30 PM local time).
