Mixed 10m Air Pistol International Teams preview: a new format for the YOG

2nd Youth Olympic Games · Nanjing, CHN

The first Mixed 10m Air Pistol International Teams medals will be assigned today, at the 2nd Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing (CHN). It’s a new event, which pairs athletes from different countries and genders, introduced in the YOG program after the 1st edition in Singapore.

The Mixed 10m Air Pistol International Teams competition is a new ISSF event, staged for the first time at the 2nd Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing (CHN).

The new format was introduced after the International Olympic Committee approved an ISSF proposal to increase the number of Youth Olympic Games Shooting Sport events from four to six, following the 2010 YOG in Singapore.

Each team is composed of two athletes, one man and one woman, of two different countries.

Teams are formed basing on the final rankings of the individual events (10m Air Pistol Men and 10m Air Pistol Women) conducted in the past days.

The 1st place 10m Air Pistol Men athlete is paired with the 20th place 10m Air Pistol Women athlete to form one team. The 2nd place 10m Air Pistol Men athlete is paired with the 19th place 10m Air Pistol Women athlete to form the next team. The pairings continue until the 20th place 10m Air Pistol Men athlete is paired with the 1st place 10m Air Pistol Women athlete so that 20 total Mixed 10m Air Pistol International teams are formed. The same system will used to form the Mixed 10m Air Rifle International teams, tomorrow.

Teams must have mixed gender and mixed nationalities, and team pairings could be adjusted to achieve this.

How does the competition runs?

The event is conducted over two days, and it includes Qualification, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semi-Finals and the Medal Rounds (Gold medal match and Bronze medal match).

Qualification and Round of 16 were conducted on the first competition day (yesterday), while the Quarterfinals, the Semi-Finals and the Medal Rounds will be staged today.

All 20 teams fired a Qualification Round (40 shots per team member in 50 minutes). The scores of the two teammates were combined to rank the teams and to determinate the 16 teams that advanced to the Round of 16.

The Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semi-finals and Medal Rounds are then conducted with a point system: the team that scores the higher combined result is awarded one point.

The first team that reaches 10 points wins the match. If the two teams are tied, no points are awarded.
