Cyprus hosted the first ISSF Shotgun World Cup stage of the season, which was closed by today’s Trap Men Final won by Alberto Fernandez of Spain, who rocketed his team atop of the standings.

The Spanish team finished atop of the medal standings of the first ISSF Shotgun World Cup Stage of the year, which was closed in Nicosia, Cyprus, today.

Thanks to the men’s Trap Gold and Silver won today by Alberto Fernandez and Antonio Bailon, and to the two Bronze medals claimed by Fatima Galvez at the women’s Trap event and by Juan Jose Aramburu at the men’s Skeet event, Spain finished in the lead ahead of the United States of America, second with 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze, and of teams Italy, Lebanon and Ukraine, placing in third with an equal tally of 1 Gold medal each.

The competition took place at the Cyprus Olympic Shooting Range of Nicosia, starting from the 17th of March. 373 athletes coming from 61 countries competed in the five Olympic Shotgun events, in their last chance to secure Minimum Qualification Scores for Rio 2016 (the MQS period closes at the end of March).

“I would like to thank the Organizing Committee of this World Cup stage,” said the ISSF Technical Delegate Mohamed Wahdan, after the last medal ceremony. “In behalf of the ISSF President Olegario Vazquez Raña and of the ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber, I declare this competition officially closed.”

“I would like to thank the International Shooting Sport Federation for entrusting Cyprus once again - said the President of the Cyprus Shooting Sport Federation Demetris Lordos - as well as all the athletes, officials and volunteers who contributed to the success of this event!”

The ISSF World Cup Series will now move on to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There, a combined Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun World Cup stage will be held from the 13th through the 25th of April, serving as an Olympic test event ahead of Rio 2016.
