Spotlights on Youth: Laetisha Scanlan and her young teammates: Aussie’s bright future

ISSF World Cup Shotgun · Al Ain, UAE

22-year-old Laetisha Scanlan just pocketed the Trap Women Gold Medal in Al Ain. Catherine Skinner, same age and nationality, came second. A great and young team!

It wasn't just a regular day for Laetisha Scanlan, taking part in the Trap Women event at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup. Well, she's an Oceania Champion, but still this occurrence had something new to her. “In Australia we don't have really big matches – said Laetisha - with the media, photographers, cameras and all that. So it did take a little bit of getting used to it, but I just focused and got my routine.”

Plus, it was her first medal match within the ISSF World Cup series. “That was a little nerve racking”, commented Laetisha, but she well managed the pressure. In fact, she only missed 3 targets throughout the whole day, finally coming to the Gold Medal. An outcome which gave her great feelings.

“That was fantastic! - she said - I shot really well today and I was just confident about going into the Finals. Then I met such Olympic Champions as Jessica Rossi, so it was a little bit intimidating, but I did my best and I made it to the Gold. I'm really happy!”

How did she make it? “I have no idea, I guess it's just luck! - said a smiling Laetisha - I don't know, I'm really happy with how I shot. The range here in Al Ain is beautiful, everything went smoothly, the competitors were great and... It was just good.”

The Trap Women Gold Medal match was all about Australia. Laetisha Scanlan duelled with Catherine Skinner: two teammates competing for the highest step of the podium. Finally, Laetisha outdid Catherine, but that was anyway a great satisfaction for Aussie, which appears to have a bright future in shooting.

Laetisha confirmes that: “Australia got a lot of juniors and developing people that are making teams and shooting well enough to compete against important athletes. It's great for the sport, it's great for Aussie and I'm really happy about it!”

Everything looks just great on Laetisha's side, who's now thinking of the next event: “We still have to qualify, but hopefully I'll be there in July for the World Cup in Granada.”

Spain, watch out: the Australians are coming!
