12th Asian Championship: Medals and Quota

2011 Dakar rally Champion secured a spot for London 2012, while Kuwait’s father and son won Olympic Quota. China atop of the medal standings with 75 medals.

The People’s Republic of China topped the medal standings of this year’s Asian Championship, staged in Doha, Qatar, from the 11th trough the 22nd of January.

The Chinese team placed atop of the final rankings with an outstanding total of 75 medals (33 Gold, 27 Silver and 15 Bronze awards). Korea followed in second place, with 28 medals, while India stepped up in third with 27 awards. The home team, Qatar, finished in fourth place, with four Gold, two Silver and one Bronze medals.

Thirty-three Quota Places – the entrance tickets to the 2012 Olympic Games - were distributed during this year’s Asian Championships.

Kuwait celebrated a “family” success, with two Quota Places won by the young 2011 Trap Junior World Champion Talal Alrashidi, 19, and by his father, the 49–year old three-time Skeet World Champion Abdullah Alrashidi.

“I am so proud of my son. I have encouraged him to start shooting, but he choose independently to shoot Trap.” The Skeet champion Alrashidi said during the last ISSF World Championship in Belgrade, in September. “I dream about going to the Olympic together with my son!” The proud father added.

The hosting nation, Qatar, secured three Olympic Quotas, also thanks to the 2011 Dakar Rally winner Nasser Al-Attiya who won the Skeet event with an outstanding perfect total score of 150 hits out 150 targets, equalling the current World Record. Al-Attiya had just came back from South America, where he was racing in this year’s edition of the Dakar rally, to try to secure a pass to the next Olympic Games. “I have two passions: shooting and rally. I won the 2011 Dakar rally, and after finishing in fourth at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, my sights are aiming to the London Games.”

The qualification path to the Games is almost completed: the last Quota Places to be assigned through ISSF competitions will be distributed at the 10m European Championship in Vierumaeki, Finland, kicking off the next 14th of February.
