Arunovic pockets the Air Pistol Gold: 'This is for the Serbian people who lost their homes'

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol · Maribor, SLO

The 27-year old shooter from Belgrade came back atop of the ISSF World Cup podium winning the Gold with 1.7 points of advantage on the silver medallist, and dedicated the medal to her fellow-citizens after the flood that devastated Serbia.

The reigning world champion Zorana Arunovic of Serbia (27) won today's 10m Air Pistol Women final at the 2014 ISSF World Cup in Maribor, coming back atop of the ISSF world cup podium two years after her last victory in this event.

Arunovic, currently ranked second in the world, finished atop of the leaderboard with 202.4 points: almost two points more than what scored by today's Silver medallist, the Russian first-time finalist Ekaterina Korshunova, who closed the match in second with 200.7 points.

The turning point of the match was a great 10.9 that Arunovic scored at her 15th shot, gaining a safe lead over her followers. Neither Korshunova (26), nor Bulgaria's Antoaneta Boneva (28) could catch her up. While Korshunova finished on the second step of the podium pocketing her first ISSF medal evenr, the winner of the first world cup stage of the year Boneva finished in third claiming the Bronze with 175.7 points, today.

Arunovic said: ““It's great to be back: I had won my last world cup gold in this event back in 2012. But this medal has a special meaning. My country, Serbia, has been suffering for a devastating flooding, recently. Thousand of families lost their homes, and we've being volunteering to help as we could. This medal is for my people, I dedicate it to them.”

Winning this medal, also helped Zorana to achieve one of her goals: “It takes pressure off from me. I really wanted to qualify for the ISSF World Cup Final, and this was my last chance to make it, beside the World Championship. I am not coming to the last world cup leg in Beijing, indeed.”

2014 is all about the ISSF World Championship, that will take place in Granada, Spain, next September. “I will be going to a training camp in Granada: I want to train on the lines of the World Championship range. There, the first Olympic quota places will be assigned next September, and I want to be ready for that.” Arunovic explained. She will be walking into the match as the title defender (she won it in 2010), with four more years of experience in her sights, and a world cup gold medal around her neck.
