Twenty-four Youth Olympic Quota Places were assigned during the European Championship in Air events in Meraker, Norway.
The 2010 European Shooting Championship in Air Weapon events, which took place in Meraker, Norway, from the 6th through the 14th of March, turned into a stage of success for young shooters. Next to the usual Junior events, this year were indeed organized special qualification events to award Youth Olympic Games Quota Places, the “entrance tickets” for the first edition of the Youth’s Games that will take place next August in Singapore.
24 Quota Places were assigned to the top-6 competitors in YOG categories, in the events of Air Rifle and Air Pistol, Men and Women. The YOG Quota Places are the qualification tickets to enter the Youth Olympic Games. They are awarded by the ISSF to those shooters who reach the best results during designated ISSF YOG Qualification competitions. Quota Places are country-related: the shooter wins a quota place, which is then at disposal of his/her country. Each country is free to decide how to use the Quota Places won by its shooters. Therefore, the shooter who secures a Quota is not automatically qualified for the Games, as the final decision has to be taken by his/her national authorities.
The first edition of the Youth Olympic Games will take place in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010. There, 3200 athletes aging between 14 and 18 will compete in 26 different sports. Eighty young shooters will have a chance to compete in four events: Air Rifle and Air Pistol, Men and Women.
YOG Quota Places for shooting sport were assigned at the Oceania Championship in Sydney, at the Asian Championship held in Doha, Qatar, and at the European Championship in Meraker, Norway. The next quotas will be distributed at the Africa Youth Qualification Championship in Tipaza (Algeria) starting from the 23rd of March, and at the Confederation of the Americas Championships in Guatemala City, starting from the 24th of March.
