10m Air Rifle Men Junior

Juniors – Ukraine led 10m Air Rifle, America the Trap Women event

50th ISSF World Championship All Events · Munich, GER

Two Ukrainian shooters claimed Gold and Silver at the first Junior competition of the 2010 ISSF World Championship, the 10m Air Rifle Men Junior. USA finished in the spotlight at the Skeet Women Junior event, placing two young athletes in first and third place.

The 10m Air Rifle Junior Men event turned in favor of Ukraine, today, at the 50th ISSF World Championship in all shooting events in Munich. Two young Ukrainian shooters finished indeed in first and second place, bringing two flags of their country on the first Junior podium of this 2010 World Championship. Sergiy Kasper, 17-year old, coming form a Silver medal won at the European Championship of Meraker earlier this year, won the match with ease with a total score of 595 points. His teammate Serghy Kulish, 17, finished narrowly behind him at 594 points, while the Russian athlete Alexander Dryagin grabbed Bronze with 593 points thanks to 49 bulls-eye hits.

Women’s Trap Junior event put USA on the podium--twice, that is.  First, Rachel Heiden stepped up to the plate to battle for the bronze medal with Zhu Jingyu of China.  The two were tied at 68 targets and it took Heiden one target to douse Jingyu’s hopes of a medal.  Next up, young American Miranda Wilder and Australia’s Catherine Skinner, tied at 69 targets, remained neck and neck for nine shoot-off birds.  Skinner stepped up to the fifth position and made a disappointing miss on an off-hand side bird that was climbing rapidly.  The large contingency of American fans anxiously awaited Wilder’s opportunity.  Taking her time preparing, Wilder stepped up to the line and calmly broke the target as if a World Championship title was not on the line.  She was greeted by a line of well-wishing and hugging American teammates and officials.
