The reigning Olympic Champion Katerina Emmons of Czech Republic won the 10m Air Rifle Women event, on the first day of the 2012 ISSF World Cup in Rifle and Pistol events taking place in Milan May 13-21.

The 28-year old Champion had won her last World Cup Stage in 2010, in Sydney, while her last ISSF medal had been a Silver gained in Munich, last year.

Emmons made it to the final with an equalled world record of 400 points, tied to Germany’s Sonja Pfeilschifter. Then, shooting consistently from the first to the last shot, she build up an outstanding total score of 505.5 points. More than one point of advantage on Pfeilschifter, and just one tenth of a point far from the current Final World Record of 505.6 points.

“I have been away from the top for so long, that I did not even have a clue of what the Final World Record was!” Emmons said, smiling right after the match.

“I have been doing a lot of work, training hard, and it paid-off. It has been a great match, and the good news is that I feel good and everything worked as it should.” She added.

“I did not come to the London World Cup, this year the schedule is full, and I did not want to stress myself. – The Czech Champion commented on her plans for the Olympic year - I will now compete in Munich, and then in two international matched in Poland and France, before the Games.”

The world ranking’s number 2, Germany’s 41-year old finalist Sonja Pfeilschifter, closed the match in second with 504.2 points, after scoring 104.2 points in the final. Not enough to catch up Emmons, who turned out to be unbeatable today. Pfeilschifter had won the first ISSF World Cup Stage of the year, on the Olympic lines of the RAB shooting range in London, where Emmons did not compete.

The fight for the Bronze medal between the two Chinese teammates Du Li (the 2004 Olympic Champion) and Yi Siling (the reigning World Champion and final world record holder) finished in favour of the latter.
