Peaking for the Games: Olympic Gold Chen wins Munich’s 25m Pistol Women

China’s Olympic Champion Chen Ying shot 208.4 points in the 25m Pistol Women Final to climb in the lead, overtaking the qualification’s leaders. Following her, world’s #3 Celine Goberville of France took the Silver.

The Olympic Games are getting closer and closer and the top-shooters are peaking for the great event. And Chen Ying of China, Beijing’s 25m Pistol Women Olympic Champion, makes no exception. The 34-year old shooter won indeed today’s 25m Pistol Women Final, climbing up from the fourth place, and scoring over 208 points in the final match.

 

A great results: qualified for the medal match with 583 points in fourth place, six points behind the qualification’s leader Nino Salukvadze of Georgia, Chen Ying shot today’s best score in the final, 208.4 points. Nobody could match her, and the Chinese champion secured the brightest medal with a total of 791.4 points.

 

After her Bronze at last year’s ISSF World Cup Final in Wroclaw, this was Chen’s first medal of the season. “Hopefully not the last!” she said after the final. “Today I have been able to focus only on my target, forgetting about all the rest, and it worked fine.”

 

“I am preparing for the Olympic Games, working on the technical aspects but also on my physical preparation.” The reigning Olympic Champion said.

 

“I won’t participate in any other competition before the Olympics. I want to focus on the big match ahead of me.” Chen concluded.

 

Following her, the Silver medal went to France’s Celine Goberville, ranked third in the world. The 25-year old shooter, who had won a World Cup final Bronze medal here in Munich in 2010, climbed form the fifth place where she had started with 583 points by scoring 206.6 points in the final, winning her second medal of the season with 789.6 points.

 

The current World Rank leader, Czech Republic’s Lenka Maruskova, the 2004 Olympic Silver medallist, found a spot on today’s podium as well. The 27-year old shooter, coming from a Silver medal won at the last ISSF World Cup Stage in Milan and from a Bronze won at the ISSF pre-Olympic World Cup in London, scored a total of 787.3 points, climbing up from the seventh place by shooting 204.3 points in the final.

 

She was followed by Bulgaria’s Anthaneta Boneva, 26, who finished in fourth with 785.1 (583+202.1) points, while the qualification’s leader Nino Salukvadze of Georgia ended up in fifth place with 784.5 (586+198.5) points. Spain’s Sonia Franquet followed in sixth place with 782.5 (583+199.5) points, preceding the home shooter Munkhbayar Dorjuseren of Germany who closed the match in  seventh with 781.6 (583+198.6) points, 3.6 points more than what scored by Switzerlan’s Heidi Diethelm, eighth with 778.0 (585+193.0) points.

 

The ISSF Rifle & Pistol World Cup continue tomorrow, with the 50m Rifle Prone Man and the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men finals taking place at 11.15 and 15.15 (GMT+1).
