-3 to the Games. The Trap Women event: classic shooting, true emotions

XXX Olympic Games · London, GBR

EVENT PREVIEW: Who likes the classics? The Trap event is an icon within the shooting sport. In the final, you get a random target, and you only have one shot to hit it. Hit or miss. And you can’t miss at the Olympics if you want to reach the top.

The World Ranking and ISSF NEWS Magazine’s “Super 25 Chart” are slightly different for the Trap Women event. It depends on the time frame we take into consideration to rank the shooters, and on the weight that we assign to the different values.

But if you take the Top 5 you can’t miss: these girls will play a decisive role at the 2012 Olympics. Chinas Liu Yingzi is our Super 25 Top Ranked Trap female shooter. She competed in 17 ISSF events in the last Olympic cycle and made it to eight finals. And every time she entered the medal match, she made it to the podium, winning 8 medals, including 5 Gold. Her personal best in the last cycle are 74 hits out of 75 targets in qualifications, and 24 hits out of 25 targets in finals. Let’s say she’s not the girl you want to face in an Olympic final.

That will be the task for a champion, a champion like Italy’s Jessica Rossi. The 20-year old shooter from Crevalcore, near Bologna, is said to be one of the favorites in the race for the London podium. She won the 2009 ISSF World Championship, finishing in the spotlights at the age of 17, and since then she has entered 9 final matches, winning 8 medals (including 3 Gold).

The 2008 Olympic Gold, Silver and Bronze medalists are also looking for glory. Finland’s Satu Makela-Nummela, the reigning Olympic Champion, has not been having her best performances in the last Olympic cycle. Out of 16 participations in ISSF events, she finished on the podium three times, and has not won a competition since the 2008 Games. But she’s strong-minded: she proved it in Beijing, and she is willing to confirm it in London as well.

On the other hand, Slovakia’s Zuzana Stefecekova, Silver medalist in Beijijg, and the USAs Corey Cogdell, Bronze in Beijing, have been two of the most consistent Trap Women shooters of the last four years, as you can appreciate in the table.

They are young and well trained, but they will most certainly have to face 24-year old Spanish shooting star Fátima Gálvez. She’s number 1 in the World Ranking in this event after winning the European Championship last year and three medals at this year’s ISSF World Cup Series. She was the earned Gold at the pre-Olympic test event at the Royal Artillery Barracks, the Olympic venue. Winning such a tight match in front of former Olympic Champions and of a number of older and titled shooters gave her the confidence to state that the Olympic Gold is definitely on her sights.
