1980 Olympic Gold Medallist Melentiev passes away at 60

Alexander Melentiev, 1980 Olympic Gold Medallist in the 50m Pistol Men event, died on February 16, 2015 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where he spent most of his life.

Alexander Melentiev’s career is an example of loyalty and dedication to the shooting sport: Melentiev won 8 gold medals at the ISSF World Championships, he was a 7 times European champion and a 13-time winner of the USSR Championships. His World Record score at the Games of the XXII Olympiad in Moscow – 581 points – lasted for 34 years, until the 2014 ISSF World Championship in Granada.

After finishing his own career as an active athlete, Alexander Melentiev dedicated his knowledge and experience to the education of the young shooters.

The ISSF expresses its deepest condolences to his family.
