Italy and United States rule the Shotgun matches of the day, Peni and Skeries also grab a Gold medal

Another packed day went through at the ISSF Junior World Cup, and Italy is leading the total medal standings also thanks to today’s Gold-Silver combo in the Trap Women Junior event. USA’s Katharina Monika Jacob claimed the Gold medal in the Skeet Women Junior event, while Istvan Peni of Hungary and Michelle Skeries of Germany pocketed their third and second medal of this competition, respectively.

Four more Olympic Shooting events were conducted today in Suhl (GER), where the ISSF Junior World Cup is taking place. World Cup medallists Istvan Peni of Hungary and Katharina Monika Jacob of the United States secured the top of the podium in the 3 Positions Men event and in the Skeet Women event, while an all-Italian match in the Trap Women Junior event crowned Isabella Cristiani as the Gold medallist. In the fourth and conclusive event of the day, Germany’s Michelle Skeries secured the 1st place in the 25m Pistol Women final.

 

50m Rifle 3 Positions Men Junior

 

In the opening event of the day Hungary’s Istvan Peni claimed his third medal in this competition, after the Gold he secured in the Rifle Prone event and the Bronze he pocketed in the Air Rifle one.

 

In the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men Junior final, Peni dominated the match from the beginning, closing the kneeling position series in 1st place, and sailing away during the prone one, after which  the Hungarian was sitting on a 2.8-points lead. During the standing series, then, Peni literally disappeared from his opponents’ sight, concluding the match with the enormous advantage of 13.5 points and setting a new Junior Final World Record with 458.6 points.

 

Two Swiss shooters completed the podium in 2nd and 3rd place: Christoph Duerr, Gold medallist at last year’s Junior Cup here in Suhl, finished with 445.1 points and the Silver medal, while his teammate Manuel Luescher concluded with 436.4 and the Bronze.

 

Emilien Chassat of France placed just outside of the medal positions, finishing 4th with 427.5 points.

 

Despite closing the kneeling and the prone series in last place, Italy’s Riccardo Armiraglio shot consistently in the standing one, eventually finishing 5th with 414.7 points, followed in 6th place by his teammate Giacomo Maurina with 405.6, and in 7th place by Germany’s Maximilian Dallinger with 395.4 points.

 

Russia’s Timur Akhmedzhanov was the first to be eliminated from the final after the 40th shot, concluding 8th with 394.8 points.

 

On the team’s podium, Italy’s Armiraglio, Maurina and Giuseppe Pio Capano collected the Gold medals, followed in 2nd place by Germany’s Dallinger, Lukas Fischer and Markus Abt, and in 3rd place by the Russian Federation’s Akhmedzhanov, Vladislav Fetisov and Artem Filippov.

Skeet Women Junior

 

Another ISSF World Cup medallist followed Peni on the highest step of today’s second podium.

 

USA’s Katharina Monika Jacob, Bronze medallist at this year’s World Cup stage in Nicosia (CYP), secured the Junior Gold medal in Suhl, performing greatly in the medal match, where she met and beat Finland’s Niina Aaltonen, competing here in her first final phase as a junior.

 

Jacob performed almost perfectly in the final, crushing 15 out of 16 targets and leaving no chances to her opponent, who concluded with 10.

 

In the Bronze medal match, France’s Noemie Battault survived a late slump and prevailed over Germany’s Eva-Tamara Reichert. Despite missing her last three targets, in fact, the French shooter, who was sitting on a comfortable lead after the first three stations, claimed the Bronze medal with the final score of 11 hits to 9.

 

5th, eliminated from the medal matches after losing a shoot-off against Battault, placed USA’s Samantha Simonton with 9 hits, followed in 6th place by Alina Fazylzyanova of the Russian Federation, who crushed 8 semifinal targets.

 

On the team’s podium, United States of America placed 1st thanks to Jacob, Simonton and Sydney Carson, followed by the Russian Federation, 2nd with Fazylzyanova, Regina Shakirova and Margarita Gevorkian. 3rd and awarded with the team Bronze medal, placed Turkey’s Nur Banu Ozpak, Izel Aydin and Deniz Ustundag.

Trap Women Junior

 

Competing on an international level for the first time in her career, Italian Trap Women Junior shooter Isabella Cristiani pocketed the brightest medal in Suhl, beating her friend and teammate Maria Lucia Palmitessa in a thrilling gold medal match.

 

After sealing the semifinal with the best score of the round, 12 targets, the two Italian shooters finished tied at 11 at the end of the regular final, entering a tie-breaking shoot-off that, after Palmitessa missed a target on her very first double, crowned Cristiani with the Junior World Cup Gold medal.

 

Palmitessa previously entered the Gold medal match by prevailing over USA’s Cheyenne Waldrop in a first shoot-off, while in a second one Australia’s Stephanie Pile bested both Nataliya Chistova of Russia and Bettina Valdorf of Germany, joining Waldrop in the Bronze medal match.

 

There, despite missing her first two targets, Pile crushed the remaining thirteen clays, claiming the Bronze medal with a 13-hits-to-9 victory.

 

Outside of the medal matches, Valdorf placed 5th with 10+2 hits, while Chistova finished 6th with 10+0.

25m Pistol Women

 

In the fourth and final event of the day, Germany’s Michelle Skeries took her revenge on Greece’s Anna Korakaki, after they shared the Air Pistol Women podium on Monday, when Korakaki claimed the Gold and Skeries pocketed the Bronze.

 

In the 25m Pistol Women Junior final, indeed, Skeries faced Korakaki in the Gold medal match, beating the Greek shooter despite conceding her the first two points of the final. Korakaki, who encountered some technical issues along the match, tied the match at 4 with a perfect 5-out-of-5 fourth series, but conceded 3 consecutive points that delivered Skeries the Gold medal.

 

With the Silver medal, Korakaki matched her previous best result in this event. A 2nd place she nailed at the European Championship in Belgrade (SRB) in 2011.

 

In the previous Bronze medal match, Agate Rasmane of Latvia, who won the Bronze medal in the Air Pistol event at last year’s Junior Cup, beat Czech Republic’s Anna Dedova at the end of a tight battle, claiming the Bronze with an 8-points-to-6 victory.

 

Two Russian shooters placed just outside of the medal matches positions: Margarita Lomova, in fact, placed 5th with 13 hits, followed by her teammate Natalia Ordina with 12. France’s Clara Merlet and Germany’s Cora Doerr completed the panel of semifinalists, respectively placing 7th with 11 hits and 8th with 9.

 

On the team’s podium, Lomova and Ordina together with Irina Serebryanskaya earned the Gold medal for Russia, while Germany’s Skeries, Teresa Gross and Lisa Schnaidt placed 2nd, and India’s Sanjana Sehrawat, Chinky Yadav and Gauri Sheoran placed 3rd.

The ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl will conclude tomorrow with the last two finals: the Skeet Men Junior, scheduled at 4:15 PM (UTC+2), and the Trap Men Junior, taking place at 5:15 PM.
