The Ukrainian 33-year-old shooter entered the final with the highest qualification score, then closing the gap on Turkey’s Yusuf Dikec in the latest stage of the match. Serbia’s Damir Mikec secured the Bronze medal.

Another thrilling match opened the second competition day at the Gabala Shooting Club, where the ISSF World Cup Stage 5 is currently taking place.

In the 50m Pistol Men final, Ukraine’s 33-year-old Oleh Omelchuk battled with Turkey’s 44-year-old for the highest step of the podium, finally overtaking his rival in the latest stage of the match. At the end of the 6th series, in fact, Dikec was sitting on a 3.1-points lead over Omelchuk, who then shot four-out-of-six shots into the tenth ring, while Dikec hit a disappointing and costly 7.1 with his third-to-last-shot, losing the lead.

In the final series, then, the Ukrainian managed to maintain the lead, pocketing his fifth World Cup Gold medal in this event with 230.4 points, while the Turkish three-time Olympian secured the Silver with 228.5.

“I didn’t shot before Dikec to put pressure on him,” he commented. “I felt ready quite quickly, so as soon as I was ready I fired my shots, and luckily they were good enough… It’s not my usual style, but this time I was feeling quite confident.”

“I’m preparing very carefully for the upcoming European Championship in Baku,” he added. “Then I’ll focus on the ISSF World Cup Final.”

On the third step of the podium placed Serbia’s 33-year-old Damir Mikec, Gold medalist in this event at the Baku 2015 European Games, who pocketed the Bronze medal with 205.5 points. It’s his eighth career medal in the men’s 50m Pistol event. Mikec was followed by Slovakia’s 38-year-old Pavol Kopp, also on the European Games podium two years ago, who concluded in 4th position with 187.7 points.

Germany’s 25-year-old Philipp Grimm, who was the youngest participant in the final, concluded in 5th place with 168.5 points, despite starting with a powerful 5-shot series that gave him the lead at the first break.

Grimm was followed by Serbia’s second finalist, Dimitrije Grigic (32) who scored 147.8 points and took 6th place, failing to match or best the Bronze he won last month in Munich (GER). Republic of Korea’s Han Seungwoo, the current number 7 in the World Ranking, finished in 7th position with 128.6.

Ukraine’s second finalist Viktor Bankin (26) was the first shooter to be eliminated after shot number 12. He scored 107.3 points, and placing 8th he bested the 16th position he nailed in Munich (GER) last month.
