ISSF Authorities visited the area where the Olympic Shooting Range will be completed in the next months. The shooting range will be a temporary facility now being built on the grounds of East London’s iconic Royal Artillery Barracks.

Construction for the 2012 Olympic Games shooting venue has now begun, and ISSF Authorities visited the area where the Olympic Shooting Range will be completed in the next months.

ISSF President Olegario Vázquez Raña visited the venue site, and there he received a detailed briefing on the range plans, toured the site and participated in a ceremonial groundbreaking for the project.  ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber and Vice President Gary Anderson accompanied him in the visit, in occasion of the 2011 SportAccord Convention in London.

“The ISSF strongly supported the selection of the Royal Artillery Barracks site because it is in the heart of the Olympic venues and, for our athletes, will be only 20 minutes from the Olympic Village. “ The ISSF President said.

ISSF Vice Presidents Gary Anderson and Medhat Wahdan are the two Technical Delegates for the 2012 shooting events, for Rifle & Pistol and Shotgun events, respectively. “We are constantly in touch with the Olympic Development Authority.” Mr. Anderson explained. “We were told that the venue would be completed by November. Then, the interiors and the target systems will be installed between January and February.”

The venue will be tested between the 17th and the 29th of April 2012, when a Pre-Olympic World Cup will be held at the range.
