Air Pistol's Olympic Champ Guo (CHN): back in time for the World Championship

ISSF World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Munich, GER

Guo won the 10m Air Pistol final at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, coming back atop of an ISSF podium after four years. Right in time: she will be one of the favorites at the forthcoming World Championship, where she will have a chance to win a quota to participate in her third Olympics.

The last day of competitions of the 2014 ISSF Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events in Munich was opened by the 10m Air Pistol Women final.

The 2008 and 2012 Olympic Champion Guo Wenjun of the People's Republic of China (29) won the medal match with 200.3 points, putting 1.7 points behind her and the Silver medallist, Poland's first-time finalist Klaudia Bres (second with 198.6 points). Bres (19) today's youngest finalist, had finished in the spotlights already last year, when she became the European Junior Champion in Odense, but she had never made it to a world-level medal match, before.

Guo came back atop of an ISSF podium after four years: she had indeed pocketed her last world cup medal back in 2010, when she won an ISSF world cup stage held on her home range, in Beijing.

The Chinese champion said to be ready, four months before the 51st ISSF World Championship in all shooting events that will be held in Granada, next September. There, she will have a chance to grab one of the first Olympic Quota places of Rio 2016, the qualification slots for the next Games.

“On one side I am really excited. On the other hand, I am a bit surprised about this medal.” Guo said. “I did not have a good feeling during the last trainings, I was not no so confident going into the final.”

“I am working on it, I will do what I need to do, and today's result makes me feel better on the way to the next competitions.” The Chinese shooter concluded.

Alejandra Zavala, the 29-year old Mexican athlete who had won last year's ISSF World Cup stage in Granada, Spain, took today's Bronze behind Guo and Bres with a final score of 177.2 points.

She was followed by the two-time Olympian Sonia Franquet (33) from Spain. The pistol shooter from Madrid scored 156.5 points taking fourth place, and put behind her the 2004 Olympic Champion Olena Kostevych (29), a 10-time ISSF World Cup medallist from Ukraine, who closed the medal match in fifth place with 136.4 points.

Belarus' Viktoria Chaika, a four-time Olympian who've won at least five ISSF world cup medals here in Munich throughout her 20-year long career, did not make it to the podium, today. The 33-year old athlete from Minsk eventually placed in sixth place with 115.8 points, after fighting neck and neck against Franquet and Kostevych.

She was followed by Hungary's first-time finalist Adrienn Nemes (22) who placed in seventh with 96.7 points and by Bulgaria's Antoaneta Boneva (28), eighth with 72.3 points.

The ISSF World Cup in Munich will continue this afternoon with the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men and the Skeet Men medal matches, follow the event on www.issf-sports.org
