ISSF Junior World Cup gets underway in New Delhi with pistol home victory

The ISSF Junior World Cup has gotten underway in New Delhi, India; giving young athletes a last chance to impress this season.

For the home nation, Jonathan Antony has already delivered their first title of the competition, winning the gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol.

From the off, Antony was the leader by a considerable margin, holding a gap of 2.2 to his nearest rival after the first competition stage. That gap continued to grow, putting in an impressive streak of 11 shots with a score of 10.1 or more. He would finish with a score of 244.8, 8.5 ahead of second-placed Luca Arrighi from Italy on 236.3. The bronze medal would go to Lucas Sanchez Tome from Spain, holding off AIN athlete Vladislav Makarov for the final spot on the podium.

Evelina Sheina was the standout performer in the women's 10m air pistol final, winning on her Junior World Cup debut in style. Holding a lead of nearly five points before the elimination, Sheina maintained the gap, winning by 4.8 points on a total of 240.9. India's Rashmika Sahgal took silver with a total of 236.1, while Iran's Fatemeh Shekari bettered her compatriot Parimah Amiri for bronze.

India had a clean sweep of the podium in the women's 50m rifle prone, with Anushka Thokur beating her teammates Anshika and Aadhya Agrawal to the title. The men's gold medal went to AIN athlete Kamil Nuriakhmetov, beating the home athletes Deependra Singh Shekhawat and Rohit Kanyan.

There are 208 athletes from 19 Member Federations entered for the ISSF Junior World Cup in New Delhi.
