The latest ISSF Academy B Course has concluded at the Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja, Finland, bringing together 40 coaches from 26 countries for a week of education, practical learning and international exchange.
Seven ISSF Academy instructors worked with the participants on site, with additional lecturers contributing to the programme remotely. Throughout the week, coaches developed their knowledge while sharing experiences and approaches from their own sporting environments.
A key feature of the B Course is its focus on the personal development of each coach. Before arriving in Finland, participants received individual feedback, which they used during the course to identify areas for improvement and create personal development plans with specific goals for their continued learning.
The approach reflects an important principle of the ISSF Academy: the development of the coach and the development of the athlete go hand in hand. By learning to evaluate their own work, respond to feedback and take responsibility for their development, coaches can also set a strong example for the athletes they support.
Beyond the educational programme, the course provided plenty of opportunities for participants to build connections. Coaches from different countries and cultures exchanged ideas and experiences, creating an international network that will continue beyond the week in Finland.
The social programme included the Coachlympics, giving participants and instructors the chance to put their accuracy, speed and teamwork to the test in a more relaxed setting. A traditional Finnish sauna evening and a gathering at the kota also provided opportunities for the group to spend time together away from the classroom.
The course concluded with a joint evaluation involving participants and instructors. The group discussed the week, shared feedback and considered how the B Course could continue to develop.
For the ISSF Academy, this evaluation is part of the learning process itself. By listening to participants and reflecting on its own work, the Academy continues to apply the same culture of continuous development that it promotes among coaches.
